I think Rivers did the smart thing by sliding early and avoiding a hit. We've seen a number of quarterbacks who wait too late to slide, get hit and get injured. Is a yard on 2nd down worth risking losing your QB for the game, multiple games or the entire season? It's unfortunate that he didn't get the first down but they had a chance on 3rd down to get it and failed and McCoy decided to kick a FG instead of going for it.

Ideally, he waits another yard before sliding and not get a hit or take a late hit but we don't know what might have happened.
